June 13, 2019Great Shed Flooring Choices
What you choose as flooring for your outdoor shed has to do with the purpose of your backyard shed. Different choices would be made for a garden shed or tool shed compared to an entertainment shed, office shed, guest shed, she shed, man cave or meditation shed. Today we will be focusing on flooring choices for sheds other than garden and tool sheds.
There are as many options for shed flooring as you have time and imagination. From quick and easy installations to more time-consuming creative endeavors, we give you some great ideas for reviving your shed flooring and giving your shed a unique style all of its own.
Sealed Plywood Flooring:
Since many sheds that are used as man caves to entertainment sheds have a plywood base floor this is a really easy solution for flooring. Once your plywood flooring base is laid decide whether you want to just seal if with polyurethane or you want to add some color and then seal the sub-floor to use as your permanent flooring. Plywood has lots of design interest that really shows when the flooring is sealed with a satin or semi-gloss polyurethane finish. If you want to get things more interesting you can add a semi-transparent stain to the mix and then seal, an easy way to add color to your plywood-finished flooring solution.
Marbleized Cement Flooring:
A more time-consuming, but highly unique solution for a more sophisticated backyard shed would be marbleized cement flooring. Here are the simple steps to create a floor that you see in high-end hotel lobbies and upper-end restaurants.
- Clean your concrete floor completely.
- Paint the floor with a concrete primer using a paint roller, making sure that your are consistent and covering the area thoroughly.
- Allow the primer to dry completely.
- Use a paint roller to once again paint the entire floor with the base color you have chosen and allow the base coat to thoroughly dry.
- Choose a complementary color to your base coat color. With paint brushes and buckets or pans of your base color and color of choice apply the two colors in unequal amounts. Mix the two colors until they blend but you can see distinct streaks and swirls. Do not allow the paint to dry completely.
- Apply a third color, different from the other two by dappling it on with a sponge before the other two colors have dried.
- Use a flared paintbrush to brush back and forth across the surface giving the flooring a feathered look.
- Give the floor at least 24 hours to dry depending on weather conditions.
- Apply a coat of polyurethane with a good-quality paintbrush and allow it to dry. Follow up with a second coat of polyurethane once the first coat has dried.
Enjoy your original work of art that is now your permanent flooring for your backyard shed.

Tile Flooring:
If you live in a warmer climate or want a floor that can take the wear and clean up well, consider tile for your outdoor shed. Easy to apply, not that tough to cut, and it’s durable.
Wood Flooring:
Nothing beats the beauty of wood and there are so many choices today to fit many different budgets. From distressed wide planks, reclaimed pine flooring with its great knots, maple plank, red oak flooring, reclaimed wood, cheery flooring, bamboo flooring, and eucalyptus flooring–all of these is an eco-friendly choices for your shed floor. On the inexpensive side, you could choose an engineered wood floor, all the beauty of wood with a wood top and layer and backing.
If you don’t want to deal with cutting planks you could opt to parquet flooring tiles; wood tiles are much like their engineered brother with a wood top layer and a backing layer.
Cork Flooring:
So many beautiful choices in cork flooring, from highly marbled to the plank look of wood. Cork flooring is about as green as it gets. Harvesting cork doesn’t damage trees and very little goes to waste. Cork is an excellent choice for anyone with allergies because it resists mold and mildew-great for moist and humid climates.
Linoleum Flooring:
Linoleum flooring comes in both rolls and tiles. If you have a small space, tiles are easier to opt for since you don’t need as much and a roll would be tough to negotiate in a small area. Linoleum is a simple, easy, inexpensive, and durable solution for your outdoor shed.
